Wisdom Teeth
By the age of 18, the average adult has 32 teeth: 16 on the top and 16 on the bottom. Each tooth has a specific name and function. The front teeth (incisors, canines, and bicuspids) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces, while the back teeth (molars) are used to grind food into a consistency suitable for swallowing.
Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
The average mouth is designed to hold only 28 teeth. Trying to fit 32 teeth into a space meant for 28 can be painful. These extra four teeth are known as wisdom teeth or third molars. Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt and often do not align properly due to lack of space. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause various problems, including:
Infection: Partially erupted teeth create an opening for bacteria, leading to infection, swelling, stiffness, pain, and illness.
Crowding: Erupting wisdom teeth can push against other teeth, disrupting their alignment.
Cysts and Tumors: Impacted teeth can develop cysts or tumors, which can damage the jawbone and adjacent teeth.
Removing impacted wisdom teeth can resolve these issues. Early removal is recommended to prevent future problems and minimize surgical risks.
Oral Examination
An oral examination and x-rays can evaluate the position of wisdom teeth and predict potential problems. Early evaluation and treatment, typically during the mid-teenage years, lead to better outcomes. This initial assessment is usually conducted by a dentist, orthodontist, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Removal Procedure
Wisdom teeth removal is typically performed under local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or IV sedation to ensure patient comfort. The choice of anesthesia and potential surgical risks (e.g., sensory nerve damage, sinus complications) will be discussed before the procedure. After the teeth are removed, the gums are sutured. Patients will bite down on gauze to control bleeding and rest under supervision until they are ready to go home. Postoperative care instructions, pain medication, and antibiotics (if needed) are provided upon discharge.
Safety and Comfort
The procedure is conducted in a safe environment with modern monitoring equipment and experienced staff to ensure optimal care and comfort.
