Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis, such as a partial or complete denture, is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery. This preparation ensures that the prosthesis fits comfortably and functions properly.

Why Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?

Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures to ensure the maximum level of comfort with their dentures. Since a denture sits on the bone ridge, it is crucial that the bone is the proper shape and size. After a tooth extraction, the underlying bone may be left sharp and uneven. To achieve the best fit for a denture, the bone may need to be smoothed out or reshaped. In some cases, excess bone may need to be removed before denture insertion.

Procedures Involved in Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

To prepare your mouth for a denture, one or more of the following procedures may be necessary:

Bone Smoothing and Reshaping: This procedure ensures that the bone ridge is smooth and even, providing a comfortable fit for the denture.

Removal of Excess Bone: Excess bone may need to be removed to allow the denture to sit properly.

Bone Ridge Reduction: Reducing the bone ridge can create a better fit for the denture.

Removal of Excess Gum Tissue: Excess gum tissue may be removed to ensure a proper fit for the denture.

Exposure of Impacted Teeth: Impacted teeth may need to be exposed and removed to allow for denture placement.

During your consultation appointment, we will review your specific needs and determine the necessary procedures to prepare your mouth for a denture.
