Orthognathic Surgery (Jaw Surgery)

Orthognathic surgery is necessary when the jaws do not align correctly and/or the teeth do not seem to fit properly with the jaws. This procedure, combined with orthodontics to straighten the teeth, repositions a misaligned jaw, improving both facial appearance and ensuring that the teeth meet correctly and function properly.

Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery can benefit individuals with improper bites or incorrectly positioned jaws. Jaw growth occurs gradually, and in some cases, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates, leading to problems affecting chewing, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance. Jaw alignment can also be impacted by injury or birth defects. While orthodontics alone can correct bite problems involving only the teeth, orthognathic surgery is required when the jaws themselves need repositioning.

Conditions That May Require Evaluation:

• Difficulty in chewing, biting, or swallowing
• Speech problems
• Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
• Open bite
• Protruding jaw
• Breathing problems

These symptoms may be present at birth, develop due to hereditary or environmental factors, or result from trauma. A thorough evaluation, including x-rays, is conducted during a consultation to determine the need for surgery. This pre-treatment consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and fully understand the aspects of your care, allowing you and your dental team to make informed decisions about proceeding with treatment.

Technology & Orthognathic Surgery

Modern computer techniques and three-dimensional models are used to plan orthognathic surgery. Comprehensive facial x-rays and computer video imaging show how the bite will be improved and provide an idea of the post-surgery appearance. This helps patients understand the surgical process and the extent of the treatment prescribed. The goal is to help patients grasp the benefits of orthognathic surgery.

Collaborative Care

If you are a candidate for corrective jaw surgery, the surgical team will work closely with your dentist and orthodontist throughout your treatment. The surgery moves the teeth and jaws into a new position, resulting in a more attractive, functional, and healthy dental-facial relationship.
