Major & Minor Bone Grafting
Over time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth can atrophy or be reabsorbed, leading to poor quality and quantity of bone necessary for dental implants. This condition often makes many patients unsuitable candidates for dental implants. However, modern techniques allow us to grow bone where needed, providing the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, restoring both functionality and aesthetic appearance.
Major Bone Grafting
Major bone grafting can repair dental implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone used for grafting can either be obtained from a tissue bank or harvested from the patient's own body, such as the jaw, hip, or tibia (below the knee). Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw.
Special membranes that dissolve under the gum are sometimes used to protect the bone graft and encourage bone regeneration, a technique known as guided bone regeneration or guided tissue regeneration.
Major bone grafts are typically performed to repair significant defects of the jaws caused by traumatic injuries, tumor surgeries, or congenital defects. These large defects are often repaired using the patient's own bone, which can be harvested from various sites depending on the size and location of the defect. Common donor sites include the skull (cranium), hip (iliac crest), and lateral knee (tibia). These procedures are usually conducted in an operating room and may require a hospital stay.
Minor Bone Grafting
Minor bone grafting involves smaller-scale procedures to augment bone in areas where it has deteriorated. This is often sufficient for preparing sites for dental implants. The bone used for these grafts can also be sourced from tissue banks or harvested from less invasive areas of the patient’s body. Minor grafts are typically performed in an outpatient setting with local anesthesia, allowing for a quicker recovery.
Bone grafting procedures are essential for patients who wish to receive dental implants but lack adequate bone structure. By restoring the bone, these procedures not only facilitate successful implant placement but also help maintain the structural integrity and appearance of the jaw and face.
